The history of NSDT is rooted in independent community action. Established in 1988 to challenge a compulsory purchase order of 200 local homes, NSDT has evolved and now delivers a range of services and activities either independently or with other local agencies to improve the lives of local families, adults, children and young people. NSDT provides youth activities, out of school provision for children, welfare and debt advice, activities for older people and health and wellbeing activities for adults. It also works to improve the energy efficiency of local homes.

Using a community development enterprising approach throughout its history, NSDT runs several social enterprises providing employment for local people such as match day car parking for West Bromwich Albion FC, a community cafe and venue and event management. These enterprises generate income streams that increase organisational sustainability and help sustain vital community activities and services.
